HCI's volunteer medical team travels with donated equipment and supplies to developing countries providing life-saving open heart surgery to local children.

Ten year old Heidi Hernandez loves dancing and playing with her friends. She could not attend school regularly as she would often get sick and be too tired to walk (and often faint). Heidi had a congenital heart defect that prohibited normal blood flow throughout her body. Unfortunately for Heidi, her home country did not have the resources to provide her with the surgery required to save her life. Now, after the HCI team of doctors, nurses and lay people operated on Heidi at a local hospital, her lips are no longer blue, she has energy and she is able to play with her friends and go to school. Heidi wants to be a doctor when she grows up.
