NO MORE 'SCARY' TRAIN RIDES

For a week every three months, Crystal held her breath as she bundled her son Armondre into a train car and took him to Montreal. There he endured painful tests and IV treatments before returning home to Ohio. Her son has brittle bone disease, or osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), and his only treatment option was over the border into Canada. The train provided the only financially-feasible solution--until she discovered Children's Transport for Life.

Like any mother, Crystal wants the best for her son. When he was diagnosed with OI during her pregnancy, she began researching treatments. And when he was categorized wtih Type II OI, the most severe type bearing the shortest life expectancy, she still maintained hope and continued searching. Finally, she discovered Shriner's Hospital in Montreal where an experimental drug was being used to treat those wtih OI.

Crystal found Children's Transport for Life online.

"That train ride [to Canada] was just scary, and it was a long two days every trip," she said.

She learned that Children's Transport was the only service that would provide transportation out of the state and into Canada as she needed.

Armondre has reached the age of eight, an incredible feat for a child with Type II OI. This means he has received treatments 32 times in his life, and, until recently, he has had to endure a long, painful train ride to get there.

Crystal said Children's Transport for Life was "a real blessing."
