In April 2002, 18 children were operated on in Managua, Nicaragua by a Children's Heart Foundation International medical team. This was the seventh trip we had made to Managua. Since our first trip in February 1996, 126 children have received lifesaving cardiac opeartions and over $600,000 in medical supplies and equipment has been donated to the children's hospital in Managua. Prior to the mission in April, a desperate mother from Santa Ana, El Salvador contacted us about her daughter, 2-1/2 year old Maria. Maria was born with Down syndrome and holes in both the upper and lower chambers of the heart, common defects associated with Down syndrome. Since Maria was unable to receive the operation she needed in her native country, we arranged for her to come to Managua during the April mission. After 2-1/2 years of anxiety and worry, Maria's mother expressed feelings of relief and happiness after her daughter's successful operation, and gratitude to all the doctors and nurses who made the operation possible.
