Lorenzo's Oil is the story of how and why Augusto and Michaela Odone founded the Myelin Project. Their son, Lorenzo was stricken with adrenoleukodsytrophy and they were told there was no cure and they should take their son home and wait for him to die. Instead, they perservered to find a cure for their son's disease. Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon portrayed Augusto and Michaela Odone in the 1992 Universal Picture's movie Lorenzo's Oil. The film recounts their quest for a cure, which led to the development of Lorenzo's Oil. The oil stopped the disease progress in Lorenzo, but did not repair his myelin or restore his lost functions. That's why the Odones, as a second part of their search, launched The Myelin Project in 1989. Although Lorenzo's condition was stabilized, they were looking for a way to restore his lost myelin. Since its inception, the Myelin Project has mobilized hundreds of volunteers from other afflicted families around the world. The Myelin Project itself is directed not by scientists, but by lay people who are struggling with myelin diseases in their own lives or in their families. Lorenzo Odone passed away on May 30, 2008, one day after this 30th birthday.
